Double Deep Push Back Racking

One of Europe’s leading food suppliers has transformed the operations at one of its UK’s coldstores by replacing its existing mobile racking solution with a double deep push back racking system which has increase storage capacity by approximately 30%.

The company had seen a major change in its operations which had previously seen a 50:50 split between coldstore and chillstore in the warehouse.

This saw the company strip the entire facility back to its structural steelwork and refurbish to create a chillstore which accounted for 90% of the floor space with a smaller coldstore in the remaining 10%.

Thistle Systems designed a solution using its Maxi Cube Push Back Racking which was a combination of 4 and 5 pallets high and 2 pallets deep together with a section of its Maxi Cube Pallet Racking to maximise capacity whilst providing the required picking faces to suit the number of SKUs being stored.

Thanks to its Max the Cube approach, which is focused on maximising every inch of space, Thistle Systems identified that removing the carts system on the ground level of racking would enable them to get an extra pallet in height.

Thistle Systems also had to overcome a key challenge which is common when replacing a mobile racking solution with regards to the tracks in the floor which can prove problematic with the positioning of new uprights. This required digging out key sections of concrete to remove the steel structure and replacing with a new floor.

The finished solution provided a total of 612 pallet positions in the push back racking with an additional 129 pallet positions with the pallet racking.
