Double Deep Racking Transforms Capacity for Food Company

One of Scotland’s leading food companies has almost doubled the storage capacity they had expected to achieve thanks to Thistle Systems’ Max the Cube approach.

The company were carrying out a full refit of existing premises to accommodate their continued growth and had approached Thistle Systems to supply standard pallet racking for their cold store, chill area and ambient storage areas.

After discussing their plans and objectives within a very tight floor area, Thistle Systems’ designed a solution using Double Deep push-back racking to double up on the potential pallet positions in the key storage areas.

Thistle’s expertise enabled the company to achieve a 57% increase in storage capacity in the cold store, with the potential to extend the system further in the future.

Thistle also developed a solution which increased the storage in the chill area, the dry goods area and the separate raw material storage facility to deliver a total capacity of 284 pallets.

The Double Deep high-density storage solution uses gravity-fed carts that hold the pallets and can be pushed back into the racking to provide additional capacity. The full effect of the gravity system is demonstrated when pallets are retrieved from the system, with the next pallet automatically rolling forward into the available picking position.

With temperatures in the cold store facility dipping to as much as minus 25 degrees, the system is designed to ensure that safety and performance are never compromised with anti-slipping measures and anti-freeze measures.
