One of Scotland’s leading players in the food and drinks sector has increased capacity and operational efficiencies in its warehouse by extending and reconfiguring its existing semi-automated Maxi Cube Shuttle Racking System.

The original shuttle racking system had doubled the storage capacity of packaging supplies in the warehouse when it was installed in 2019 and has proved to be such as success that the company was looking at ways to extend the system with the new packaging warehouse they had built.
The Thistle Systems Automated Storage team developed a solution to maximise the additional space offered by the new warehouse which not only extended the existing solution to increase capacity but also transformed the operational efficiencies by changing the usage from a First in Last Out (FILO) system to a First In First Out (FIFO) system.
Thanks to the unique modular nature of the Maxi Cube Shuttle Racking System, the solution can be easily moved, extended and reconfigured to allow it to evolve as the needs of the business changes.
The new semi-automated Maxi Cube shuttle racking system delivers over 800 pallets in high-density storage in under 400 square metres of floor space including two additional lanes of shuttle racking storage to accommodate wider pallet loads.
The Maxi Cube Shuttle Racking system is designed to store two different types CHEP/UK or Euro pallets up to 1800mm in height with a solution which accommodates up to 17 pallets deep, 4 pallets high and 12 lanes wide.
The additional 2 wide pallet lanes enable the client to store pallets with larger products that have more of an overhang on the left and right hand side of the pallet.
The FIFO system also allows the client to load the pallets from the back of the racking and retrieve them from the front of the system, minimising travel times and allowing the pallets to be moved straight into the production facility.
