High Density Picking Tower

One of Scotland’s leading food and drink companies has transformed the capacity and efficiency of their Engineering Store thanks to the two-tier high-density Picking Tower designed, supplied and installed by Thistle Systems.

Like many food and drink companies, the parts storage in the warehouse had grown organically over time and featured a combination of cabinets, steel shelving and pallet racking as well as a bespoke fabrication to store small bars.

However, with space becoming an issue, the company brought in Thistle Systems to discuss the option of a mezzanine floor to capitalise on the available height, however it quickly became apparent it was not the optimum solution.

The initial survey demonstrated the existing system provided 110 linear metres of small parts storage and 36 linear metres of large parts storage in the 54 square metres of floor space.

However, the survey also identified a real issue when it came to finding and picking parts.

Thistle designed and delivered a unique, high density Picking Tower which provided 383 linear metres of small parts storage and 50 linear metres of large parts storage – almost treble the previous capacity.

The solution used a combination of pallet racking with chipboard decks to accommodate the large and heavy components such as machinery parts and heavy duty shelving to accommodate the smaller components.

The use of pallet racking in a picking tower required a bespoke engineering solution to enable additional small parts storage to be provided above.

A key focus of the project was to increase capacity and organisation of the small parts which could feature anything from brackets and bolts to collars and coils.

Thistle designed a series of small parts areas with dividers and bin fronts to transform capacity whilst also ensuring that really small components were stored safely

And thanks to Thistle Systems’ full design and deliver service, which assumed full responsibility for achieving compliance with the latest building standards, the client was able to enjoy complete peace of mind from the turnkey approach.
