Pallet Racking Food & Drink

Thistle Systems has enabled one of the UK’s largest potato producers to maximise space utilisation in their new warehouse extension whilst ensuring they can enjoy 100% accessibility by designing and installing a warehouse racking solution to accommodate 220 pallet positions.

By working closely with the client, Thistle recognised they were using two different heights of pallets and designed the four-pallet high racking solution to feature a lower beam height to the bottom run of pallets to accommodate one of their smaller pallet sizes.

By increasing the specification of the system to incorporate heavy duty 6 metre uprights, Thistle were able to provide the client with the facility to add another 53 pallets in the future by adding another beam level to the top of the structure.

As the racking was for a very busy section of the warehouse, Thistle designed and specified a robust rack protection system featuring upright protectors and end barriers to minimise potential damage to the system as well as the ongoing costs of maintenance and repairs.

Thistle Systems’ Specialist Food and Drink Project Manager, Roddy Wylie, explained, “Our Max the Cube isn’t blinkered into maximising capacity at all costs. Whilst our process identified push back racking could have increased capacity in the same area, picking speed was more important to the client.”

He continued, “We therefore looked at how we could maximise space utilisation – by reducing the height of the first beam and increasing the uprights, we could provide the facility where the client has the choice to go 5 pallets high in the future and add an additional 24% capacity.”
