Picking Tower Doubles Capacity

After a highly successful year, the client was forecasting further growth in the next two years and needed to Max the Cube of a new warehouse facility in Scotland. The company had approximately 260 linear metres of small parts picking and some additional pallet racking in the existing facility.

However, the management team were looking to quadruple their small parts storage capacity and obtain as many pallet racking positions as possible whilst still leaving floor space for a lay down area.  After receiving an initial proposal for 360 pallets, they approached Thistle Systems to see if there were other options to support their growth plans.

Thistle developed a solution combining a high-density two-tier picking tower to provide the 1000 linear metres of small parts picking in the smallest floor space possible. This also enabled the client to have space for an optimised pallet racking system which was six pallets high and capable of storing over 800 pallet positions.

Thistle also incorporated timber decks into the racking to accommodate the variation in pallet types and sizes and designed a Pallet Gate to the PIcking Tower to allow pallets to be safely lifted onto the first floor, to dramatically improve the loading times in the picking tower, whilst ensuring safety was never compromised.
